About the farm: Been in the family for near 150 years, since early settlement in the district.  Has been a commercial dairy farm for over 100 years I believe.  Town milk farm through the 50’s to 80’s then Fresha Valley, now Fonterra.  Split calving around 100 cows on 44ha effective.  No urea, no maize, no PKE in current system but do feed meal (ex Ringrose) in shed.  Production average 45000 KGMS and all calves reared.  Currently running two different fertiliser regimes on farm – BioAg on 20 ha and Kinsey system on balance 24 ha.  Not organic but pretty close.  Call ourselves biological farmers.  Dairy farm is supported by nearby dry stock block for supplement, calf rearing and dry cow grazing.  Too much information?

About the day. This field day will start with an open discussion about the various methods of testing your farm to assess its health and productivity. We will look at soil and plant testing, biological tests and Visual soil assessments. The discussion will be led by Steve Erickson who has 35 years of growing experience and has done a wide range of testing on his farm in Waihi.  We will then have a presentation form Linda and Boyd Matson about their farm and a farm walk to look at pasture soils and stock.
